Advancing Indigenous Justice Across the United States

The Foundation for Indigenous Legal Aid & Advocacy (FILAA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing legal aid, advocacy and attorneys to Native American Tribal Members who are active in the traditional ceremonies of their tribe that cannot afford proper legal representation in federal, state and tribal court matters.

Across Tribal, State, and Federal Jurisdictions, many Public Defender offices are over-worked and a majority of those attorney’s are unable to give adequate time to every person on their caseload. Because of this, many Native American individuals face legal challenges without the resources necessary to secure effective counsel and agree to plea deals without having a complete understanding of their rights. Our organization was established to address this inequity and to stand as a trusted advocate for justice within and beyond Tribal communities.

Who We Are

The Need

Native American communities experience disproportionate barriers to legal access, including:

  • Geographic isolation and limited availability of attorneys

  • Economic hardship that prevents hiring private counsel

  • Jurisdictional complexity across Tribal, State, and Federal Courts

  • Historical and systemic inequities within the justice system

Our Impact

  • Strengthen Tribal Justice systems

  • Promote long-term community stability

  • Advance equity within broader legal frameworks

  • Reinforce the principles of Tribal sovereignty and self-governance

  • End the cycles of incarceration that threaten the continuance of cultural knowledge and teachings

  • To de-instituationalize multiple generations of Indigenous Tribal Members

  • Provide employment opportunities for impoverished tribal communities
